Tournament Structure

Senior High Level Tournaments

Regional Tournaments:
All Sr. High teams play
8-12 teams per site in most instances
Held by assigned Conferences
All teams play at least 4 matches
Top 8-16 teams from each conference advance to State, number determined by classification
All teams must bring judge, scorekeeper, and buzzers

State Tournaments:
Top 8-16 teams from each class play at locations near center of state
Top 2 teams from each classification advance to Overall
All teams must bring judge, scorekeeper, and buzzers

Overall Tournament:
Preliminary matches for seeding held shortly before tournament
Top 2 teams from each class play until eliminated (10 total)
Games are broadcast either live or later by AETN


Junior High Level Tournaments

Junior District Tournament:
All Junior high teams play
8-12 teams in most sites
Held by assigned conferences
All teams must bring judge, scorekeeper, buzzers
All teams play at least 4 matches
Top teams advance to Jr. Finals

Junior Finals:
Top teams advancing from District Tournament
Held in location near central part of state
Highest level of Jr. high play

Checklist for Teams: Items to take to tournaments

— Four to eight eligible players, must meet AAA rules for competition. If your team advances to the State Tournament, you will have to play the same team used in the Regional Tournament.

— AGQBA Handbook: Be sure all updates are included.

— Copy of AAA Certification form, filled out, with proper signatures.

— School name sign, neat and easy to read.

— Name signs for each player-captain clearly marked.

— Several scoresheets for your team's use.

— Several challenge forms

— Buzzer set-in good working order. If your team does not have a buzzer system, contact the tournament host immediately and let them know you will not bring buzzers.

— One adult to be a judge. This is required. Judges should be prepared for the job according to the guidelines in the AGQBA handbook. They will not be judging your team. It is your responsiblity to let them know they will not be able to see your team compete until the championship game.

— One student or adult to be scorekeeper. Should be trained & know what to do.

— Reference books for any challenges. Your team is responsible for bringing any resources and keeping them accessible. Challenge materials must be in the competition room. Computer data banks may be used for challenges.

— Other items as noted in host's "reminder letter."
